Why Dogs Chew, Lick, and Destroy Things When They’re Stressed

Why Dogs Chew, Lick, and Destroy Things When They’re Stressed

You bought your dog a beautiful toy.

They ignored it.

Then they redesigned your shoe.

Chewing, licking, digging, and destroying things can be frustrating, but it can also be a sign that your dog is stressed, bored, anxious, teething, under-stimulated, or trying to self-soothe.

At Kalm Pup Co, we are not veterinarians or certified trainers. We are dog parents who have watched a pup make direct eye contact while chewing something they absolutely knew was not theirs. Our goal is to share comfort and enrichment ideas that may help support calmer routines.

Dogs explore the world with their mouths. Puppies chew because they are learning and teething. Adult dogs may chew because they are bored, anxious, excited, frustrated, or trying to relax.

Licking can also be calming for many dogs. That is why lick mats are so popular. They give dogs a safe, appropriate way to focus their licking energy on something other than the couch, their paws, or your favorite blanket.

Destructive behavior can be especially common during separation stress. If your dog chews door frames, scratches exits, destroys crates, or panics when alone, speak with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

For everyday chewing and stress habits, redirection is key.

Give them better options. Durable chew toys, treat-dispensing toys, lick mats, and snuffle mats can keep their brain busy and their mouth occupied.

Create a calm routine before stressful moments. If your dog gets wild when guests arrive, before bedtime, or when you leave the house, try using a calming activity before the stress builds.

Rotate toys. Dogs can get bored with the same toy sitting there every day like old office furniture. Rotating toys keeps them fresh and exciting.

Use a calm zone. A cozy bed or quiet corner can help your dog learn where to relax. Pair that space with safe chews or enrichment so it becomes a positive place.

Avoid punishment after the fact. If you find a destroyed pillow hours later, your dog will not connect your frustration to the old event. They may just think, “Human is upset about mysterious cloud stuffing.”

At Kalm Pup Co, we believe dogs do better when they have healthy ways to release stress. Calm is not only about being still. Sometimes calm starts with chewing the right thing, licking the right mat, and resting in the right space.

Your shoes deserve peace too.

When to Call Your Veterinarian

Always speak with your veterinarian if your dog’s behavior changes suddenly, becomes severe, includes aggression, or comes with symptoms such as pain, limping, vomiting, appetite changes, weight changes, confusion, excessive itching, seizures, or loss of house-training.

Anxiety and behavior problems can be emotional, medical, or both. The right support starts with understanding what your dog is trying to tell you.
